For Full Room Skylight Scrim V Dia Beacon (1972/2022), Robert Irwin has stretched planes of translucent fabric in a V shape across two interconnected galleries.Suspended between floor and ceiling, the fabric, or scrim, is illuminated by natural light from above. The Dia Art Fountain in Beacon, New York was permitted to welcome visitors back in August, several weeks ahead of museums in New York City. Through his use of commercially available fluorescent tubes, Dan Flavin brings the viewer’s awareness to color, space, and the way they navigate this experience combined. Co-organized by Dia Art Foundation and the Menil Collection, Chryssa & New York is the first comprehensive survey of works by Greek-born artist Chryssa (19332013) to take place in North America since 1982. Bisecting one of Dia Beacon’s lower-level galleries, the green barrier draws attention to the complicated relationship between the optical and physical elements of the artist’s practice. The dimensions of this site-responsive installation are variable and aim to disrupt the architecture of the exhibition space. Positioned alongside the wall, Flavin’s square, fluorescent-green units are placed side by side at two-foot intervals, eventually ending at a glass door, while the reflection makes it seem like it extends outdoors. Beacon Project (1999-2003) highlights the subtle ways Irwin alters perception and in turn their experience at Dia Beacon. Through his use of light and space, Robert Irwin’s work shapes a viewer’s experience by influencing their perception of his work. This work, designed by Robert Irwin, was part of Beacon Project (1999-2003) created in collaboration with Dia Art Foundation to transform the once Nabisco box making factory into a modern art museum. When you first arrive at Dia Beacon, you’re greeted by landscaping that precedes the building and surrounds its exterior. Every individual matters and every individual makes a difference. DIA seeks not to become a center of the art world, but a place where a centering can occur. With the movement of the frame, the objects it contained are always changing and decentering. Dia Art Foundation, founded in 1974, is committed to initiating, supporting, presenting, and preserving extraordinary art projects. The squares inside the frame represent sites. The concept of the frame, which is used in the logotype, builds a story that land art exists both inside and outside the frame of the gallery space. The works in the DIA collection examine the relationship between site-specific installations and natural forces. The walls fade away, the senses are heightened, and time flows more slowly at DIA, allowing for an unhurried visit, free of sensorial distractions. The gallery space itself is vast, allowing monumental works to be housed with ample space.
